Meet Steven – Bikram Yoga Instructor & Studio Manager

Steven is a passionate Bikram yoga instructor and the dedicated manager of Wellness Hot Yoga. His yoga journey began in 2010 in Sydney, Australia, when a friend invited him to his first class. Steven loved it so much that he immediately asked if they could come back the next day. He practiced in Sydney for a short time, mistakenly thinking that Bikram yoga was exclusive to that one studio. When he returned home to Denver six months later, he happened to drive by a Bikram studio, pulled over to grab a schedule, and has been practicing consistently ever since.

How Bikram Yoga Transformed Steven’s Life

As a tall individual—standing at 6’7”—Steven understands the challenges of navigating a world not built for his height. From leaning down to talk to people to sitting on planes, he’s often bending forward, which can lead to poor posture. Bikram yoga has been a game-changer for him, helping him maintain a healthy spine, stand tall, and move through life with greater ease. Yoga not only helps Steven feel physically strong but also aids in faster recovery after active pursuits, especially when combined with wellness modalities like red light therapy and float therapy.

From Student to Teacher

Steven discovered Bikram yoga during a transitional time in his life, having left his job and searching for what was next. His growing passion for the practice inspired him to attend teacher training in the fall of 2011, where he graduated as the valedictorian of his class. He traveled to Massachusetts in 2012 for mentorship, intending to stay for just two weeks. Reflecting on his journey, he jokes, “It’s been the longest two weeks of my life.” Over a decade later, Steven remains a cornerstone of the WHY community as both an instructor and studio manager.

Encouraging New Students

Steven understands that the idea of hot yoga can feel intimidating, but he reassures new students that it’s designed for absolute beginners. “As yoga teachers, we see it all the time—people come in terrified of hot yoga. But there’s nothing to be scared of. You can literally lie down and take a nap the entire class if that’s where your stamina is. Then come back tomorrow and do it again. Start where you are and build from there.” He encourages students to embrace their personal journey, saying, “I’ve had setbacks and injuries, but you just meet yourself where you are and grow from there. You’re capable of much more than you think.”

Advice for Beginners

For anyone feeling apprehensive, Steven offers this advice:

“Don’t let the heat scare you. It’s like taking a nap on the beach but without the sunburn. If you come regularly in the beginning, you’ll see a positive transformation in your life.”

Life Beyond Yoga

When he’s not teaching or managing the studio (often remotely), Steven loves to travel, teach at studios across the globe, and immerse himself in different cultures. A talented musician and guitar player, Steven is also an avid fan of Bluegrass music festivals and jam sessions. He finds joy in nature through hiking, biking, and exploring new perspectives.
