Creating A Wellness Team

Wellness--we use that word a lot in yoga. What does it mean? The dictionary defines wellness as:


  • the quality or state of being healthy in body and mind, especially as the result of deliberate effort.

  • an approach to healthcare that emphasizes preventing illness and prolonging life, as opposed to emphasizing treating diseases.

At BYMV we are focused on wellness, creating a happy healthy you. Your health, your wellness, takes work, commitment, and sometimes a team of people to help you create and maintain optimal health. Bikram Yoga was designed to be a series of yoga postures focused on healing the body. The class is set up so no matter what part of you needs healing, the postures address your issue. Other healing modalities in conjunction with a yoga practice can help the body to heal even faster. I am not a medical professional but through my study of yoga I have come to understand how the body works. I use many different healing modalities to handle my own medical concerns.

Your medical doctor is a wonderful resource and we are all in this together to give you all the tools to heal when needed. Western medicine is wonderful at diagnostics. The ability to use advanced technology to examine the body (X-rays, MRIs, CT scans and a multitude of other tests) allows doctors to find out what is wrong with your body. Western medicine is a symptom-based system. At the same time their tools to heal are often limited to symptom control. This methodology works really well for some problems. Western medicine is great at curing infections through the use of antibiotics and relieving illness with drugs and surgery. These are the tools in their toolbox. They are sometimes a great solution to your health challenges. But they are not the only option and can be used in conjunction with other healing approaches.

You have many choices when deciding how to take care of yourself. Holistic treatments, often referred to as alternative medicine, help you take control and responsibility for your wellness. You create not a sickness-based plan but a true wellness plan, you have more tools to help you have a great life. Bikram yoga focuses on the whole body and mind helping maintain your good health. When you are not at ease but dis-eased you can apply other methods of healing, typically a yoga practice in conjunction with other care when needed. How do you choose which other practices you seek out?

I have my own wellness team and have learned what works best for me. My wellness team supports me in times when I need a bit more help to bring the body back to its best functioning.

For bone pain I see a Chiropractor, they can help put the skeletal system back to proper alignment and then my yoga practice helps keep the skeletal system in proper alignment.

If I experience muscle pain, I see a massage therapist. They help relieve pain and stiffness and help muscles relax. Then my hot yoga practice keeps the muscles and connective tissue mobile and pain free.

I have experienced nerve pain in the past. If you have nondescript, radiating pain, this might be nerve pain. Acupuncture helps settle nerves down allowing the yoga postures to relax the nervous system and relieve pain.

There are a myriad of other practitioners, mental health professionals, nutritionists, meditation programs, naturopaths, the list seems endless. The key is to find what works for you. Put together a team that works for you. We are so happy to be part of your team!
