My car has large BYMV decals on it, so I get stopped in parking lots and public places all the time: “Are you Teri that teaches hot yoga? Oh, I have [blah blah blah problem] and my friend told me to come see you.” Or they ask me: “My (brother/cousin/wife) has [blah blah blah problem—like arthritis, type 2 diabetes, back pain, herniated discs, knee issues, hip issues, joint replacements, etc. etc.] Do you think this yoga will help?”
I love that people want to engage me in this conversation. Years of experience have shown me over and over how powerful the body is and I know the body is self-healing on many levels. I also know this yoga is a powerful tool to have in your toolbox of healing. I encourage students to collect lots of tools: yoga, acupuncture, chiropractors, massage therapists, medical doctors—there are lots of healing modalities. I also know Bikram Yoga is accessible to everyone, it is a beginner yoga and it is a healing yoga and—once healed—it is part of a great maintenance program to keep the body in good condition.
So do I think it will help? YES—I know it will. I often end up having long conversations about past experiences with their issue, anecdotal evidence, long diatribes on how yoga helps the body. Tourniquet effect, blood flow, stretching, lymphatic system, blah blah blah. But the answer is actually so simple—so simple in fact sometimes I want to scream it: Yes this will help BUT I cannot help you until you come in the room!
That is the ultimate answer—you have to do the work. We will guide and support you, encourage you, keep you moving in the healing direction. But first you have to show up. You have to decide to be well, or at least to start down that path. We will help with the rest—I promise—but I cannot help you until you come in the room.
